Gareth Robertson's visit:

St Petersburg is a beautiful city, with so many glorious churches, palaces, galleries and museums to visit that the casual visitor may end up bewildered and confused.

Despite only having four days there, in mid-October 2005, our brief stay was a very enriching one, and we packed a massive amount in, without overdosing on culture.

We were lucky, thanks to Tripadvisor, through whom we contacted Anna and Alex (http://www.guidespb.com), recent St Petersburg University graduates, who were our guides for three of those days.

Anna speaks flawless, idiomatic English, and has charm and beauty in abundance.

As a fully qualified and registered guide, she has an unrivalled depth of knowledge of her favourite subject, St Petersburg, which she communicates with enthusiasm and grace. She is also adept at finding her way around the sometimes obstructive bureaucracy – a useful talent in a Russia that, in some aspects, has still not grasped the concept of "the customer is always right". The influence of decades of a centrally-directed state is only slowly waning in some areas.

Alex is Anna's partner, and, although his English is not as good as hers (he is a computer expert), he makes up for this with his Schumacher-like driving skills in speedily and safely negotiating the often anarchic Russian traffic, and avoiding the often gridlocked parts of town.

Thanks to them, we toured St P both by road and on a private canal boat. Amongst the many highlights of our stay were the Hermitage (worth the price of a trip on its own), the imposing St Isaac’s Cathedral, St Peter and Paul Fortress, the cruiser Aurora, Catherine’s Palace and Paul’s Palace (in the country south of St P.) and the Alexander Nevsky monastery.

I highly recommend this couple to anyone wanting to get to know the many delights of this beautiful city.
