St.Petersburg Cathedrals
During this tour you will visit the main cathedrals of the city:
- St.Isaac's cathedral St.Isaac's Cathedral is one of the largest domed structures in the world. The cathedral is faced with light-gray marble, and its interior is decorated with lazurite, malachite, porphyry, all kinds of marbles. The walls and vaults of the cathedral bear paintings and mosaic works made by well-known Russian artists.
- Kazan cathedral The Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan was erected on the site of a small stone church to hold the ancient icon of Our Lady of Kazan, and was named after it. The church is one of the top achievements of high classical architecture and a brilliant example of the arts synthesis.
- The Church of Christ’s Resurrection (The Church on the Spilt Blood) The church was put up to commemorate the tsar-martyr on the site where on March 1, 1881, I.Grinevitsky, a member of the People's Will society, mortally wounded Emperor Alexander II.
The Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan is also a memorial to the heroes of the Patriotic war of 1812.
Architecturally it revives the traditions of the 17th-century Russian church-building. In particular, it is similar to the famous Pokrovsky Cathedral (Church of St. Basil the Blessed), that stands in Red Square in Moscow. The interior of the church is unique - it is the largest mosaic ensemble existing on the church facades and interior walls.
